What Causes the Rotten-Egg Taste on Semaglutide

Sulfur burps are one of the more memorable semaglutide symptoms, and patients describe them the same way: a hydrogen-sulfide taste and smell, often worse a few hours after eating or when lying down. The mechanism is not mysterious. Semaglutide slows gastric emptying, so food and stomach acid linger longer than usual. That extended dwell time lets bacteria in the upper gut ferment sulfur-containing proteins, and the gas has to go somewhere.

Most people who report sulfur burps on Wegovy notice them within the first few weeks of treatment or right after a dose increase. That timing matters, because how long semaglutide side effects take to start varies by person and by titration schedule. Some feel queasy within 48 hours of the first injection; others sail through 0.25 mg and only get hit at 1 mg. Burps tend to arrive alongside nausea and a heavy, full feeling.

It helps to know that sulfur burps are not a sign that something is dangerously wrong. They are a predictable byproduct of a drug that is doing exactly what it was designed to do. The goal is management, not alarm.

Foods and Habits That Make It Worse

The single biggest lever is what is on the plate. High-sulfur foods feed the problem directly. Eggs, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, garlic, onion and red meat all raise hydrogen-sulfide production in a slowed gut. So does anything with a lot of added sugar, which ferments quickly and produces gas.

This is where the advice gets practical for people who are also watching their blood sugar. Vegetables good for diabetes usually include broccoli and cauliflower, so removing them wholesale isn’t the answer. Instead, cook them thoroughly, keep portions modest, and pair them with lean protein rather than eating a large raw salad. A patient in Ohio I spoke with found that switching from a raw cruciferous salad at lunch to a small serving of steamed green beans cut her afternoon burps almost entirely.

Eating patterns that quiet the gut

Large meals overwhelm a stomach that is already emptying slowly. Smaller meals, four or five a day, spread the load. Stop eating within three hours of bedtime; the burps tend to peak when you lie flat. Carbonated drinks add gas volume, and chewing gum or drinking through a straw pulls extra air into the stomach.

There is one odd but common thread in patient reports: craving milk diabetes patients often describe drinking more dairy, and dairy makes sulfur burps worse in many people. If you have leaned on milk or yogurt to soothe nausea, try switching to lactose-free options or a plant-based alternative for a week and see whether the smell changes.

Practical Steps to Stop Sulfur Burps

Start with over-the-counter options. Simethicone, the active ingredient in Gas-X, helps coalesce gas bubbles and is considered safe alongside semaglutide. Bismuth subsalicylate, the pink stuff, can reduce the sulfur smell itself, though it should not be used daily for weeks on end. Some patients get relief from a daily probiotic, particularly strains of Lactobacillus, though the evidence is mixed.

Stay upright for 30 to 45 minutes after eating. A short walk does more than sitting, because it speeds gastric transit. If burps cluster around injection day, ask your prescriber whether you can stay at the current dose for an extra four weeks before titrating up. Slower titration is the most reliable fix, and most clinicians are happy to do it.

Hydration matters more than people expect. Water keeps stool moving; constipation is a common companion to delayed gastric emptying and worsens bloating and burping. Aim for roughly half your body weight in ounces, more in summer or with exercise.

When to call your doctor

Call your provider if the burps come with severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or a stomach that is distended and tender. Those can be signs of gastroparesis or, rarely, bowel obstruction. Also flag any rapid heart rate or confusion, which could point to dehydration. These are uncommon, but they are the reasons a clinician wants to hear from you rather than have you tough it out.

Keep in mind that some side effects fade as the body adapts. Many patients find sulfur burps peak in weeks two through six and ease by month three. If yours persist past that, dose adjustment or a change in medication is a reasonable conversation.

Sleeping, Work and the Social Side

Sulfur burps are embarrassing at work, in meetings, or in a car with the windows up. A few small adaptations help. Avoid a heavy lunch before an afternoon of meetings. Keep sugar-free mints or a small bottle of water with a squeeze of lemon nearby. Chewing on a sprig of parsley or a few fennel seeds after meals is an old remedy that genuinely reduces breath odor.

At night, elevate the head of the bed six to eight inches with a wedge pillow. This reduces reflux and the lying-down burp that wakes people up. If you share a bed, tell your partner the cause; the smell is temporary and mechanical, not a hygiene failure.

Finally, be honest with your prescriber. Sulfur burps are common enough that clinicians have heard the story a hundred times, and there are real adjustments — slower titration, dietary changes, or a switch to a different agent — that can keep you on track without the daily rotten-egg reminder.
